JBL – CONTROL 28-1

The JBL Control 28-1 is a versatile 8” two-way speaker designed for a range of indoor and outdoor applications. It offers rich sonic character, wide and consistent coverage, and a contemporary look that integrates seamlessly into various decors. Ideal for use in retail stores, restaurants, health clubs, theme parks, educational facilities, hospitality venues, music cafes, and leisure spaces, the Control 28-1 excels in delivering high-quality foreground and background music as well as paging.

The speaker features JBL’s InvisiBall mounting system, which simplifies permanent installation with its high degree of vertical and horizontal rotation. Adjustments are made discreetly behind the logo badge, eliminating the need to remove the grille and enhancing theft deterrence. The design includes integrated M6 mounting points for an optional U-bracket, adding to its installation flexibility.

The Control 28-1’s low-frequency driver incorporates a woven fiberglass cone for durability and weather resistance, complemented by a high-temperature fiberglass voice coil former and wire for stable performance under high-power conditions. Its pure butyl rubber surround, along with JBL’s WeatherEdge™ technology, offers additional protection to critical components. The speaker’s cone geometry, optimized for smooth frequency response and off-axis performance, is supported by an FEA-optimized motor and linear suspension spider to reduce harmonic distortion.

The high-frequency driver features a low-viscosity ferro-magnetic fluid for improved voice coil cooling and a PEI diaphragm for smooth high-frequency sound. A lightweight Kapton™ voice coil former enhances durability and extends high-frequency response. The robust design ensures the speaker performs well in harsh outdoor environments.

The cabinet is built for resilience against sun, salt, and moisture. The grille is heavily zinc-plated and powder-coated for rust resistance, with an optional WeatherMax™ grille available for challenging conditions. Connections are made via weather-resistant screw-down terminals, and optional panel covers provide additional protection. With a frequency response extending down to 45 Hz and a handling capacity of 120 Watts continuous pink noise (240 Watts program), the Control 28-1 offers a maximum SPL of 112 dB. The speaker is also equipped with a 60 Watt 70V/100V multi-tap transformer for use on distributed lines. Available in black or white, it accepts various paints and finishes to suit any décor.
